چکیده

INTRODUCTION It has been well documented that individuals with chronic low back pain (CLBP) tend to exhibit different muscle activation patterns in the trunk musculature when compared with healthy individuals. Studies investigating the flexion relaxation phenomenon have observed the persistence of muscle activation during full trunk flexion in CLBP [1], while Silfies et al. [2] found that CLBP exhibited higher abdominal activation levels during loaded reaching movements. These previous findings highlight the importance of understanding the neuromuscular control of movement in healthy individuals, which can then in turn be compared to CLBP patients. However, trunk muscle activation patterns have typically only been assessed during single plane movements; in addition, muscles are generally examined in isolation, as opposed to investigating the relationships between muscles’ activation patterns. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess global co-contraction levels of the trunk musculature during both single-plane and multi-axial movements in sitting and standing postures.

Comparison of generalised and directed co-contraction of knee joint muscles during four different movements to strengthen the quadriceps

Background: The determinant role of different movements to strengthen the quadriceps on rate of knee joint co-contraction, hamstring to quadriceps muscle activity ratio and vastus medialis to vastus lateralis muscle activity ratio provides useful information for therapists, coaches and athletes about the role of each movement in the rehabilitation of patients with anterior cruc...

The Effect of Exhaustive Protocol on Knee Muscle Co-contraction in Healthy People and with a Pronated Foot during Running

Background and Aim: Fatigue and abnormalities in the lower extremities, such as the pronated foot, can adversely affect the biomechanics of human movements such as running, leading to a lack of muscle contraction and unstable symptoms in the joints of the lower extremities (knees). Therefore, the main purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of exhaustive protocol on knee muscle co-c...

Trunk Muscle Activity Is Modified in Osteoporotic Vertebral Fracture and Thoracic Kyphosis with Potential Consequences for Vertebral Health

This study explored inter-relationships between vertebral fracture, thoracic kyphosis and trunk muscle control in elderly people with osteoporosis. Osteoporotic vertebral fractures are associated with increased risk of further vertebral fractures; but underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Several factors may explain this association, including changes in postural alignment (thoracic kyphosis) a...

Effect of Ankle Brace on the Activity and Co-Contraction of Ankle Muscles During Single-Leg Landing

Objectives: The results of a few studies about the effects of ankle brace on muscles function during the performance of different tasks are contradictory. Moreover, the effect of brace on the co-contraction of ankle muscles is undiscovered. Therefore, the present study investigated the effect of brace usage on the ankle muscles activity and co-contraction during single-leg landing. Methods: Fi...

Trunk use and co-contraction in cerebral palsy as regulatory mechanisms for accuracy control.

In the present study, we examined whether individuals with cerebral palsy (CP) systematically vary motion of the trunk and co-contraction in the upper limb as a function of accuracy demands. Four participants with spastic tetraparesis, four with spastic hemiparesis, and four healthy controls were asked to repeatedly move a spoon back-and-forth between two target locations. The task was external...
